Thanks to its capacitance, it is possible to achieve heating of the tissues on which it operates and various other effects.

The resistive mode, on the other hand, produces an increase in temperature due to the Joule effect. The passage of electric charges between the two metal electrodes generates heating of the tissues between them, which will be greater in tissues with a higher electrical resistance, such as ligaments, tendons, skin, fat and bone tissue. All these types of tissue will heat up more during a resistive application than a capacitive one, at the same intensity used.

It is worth remembering that with the resistive mode it is necessary to use about 30-50% of the intensity used in the capacitive mode, in order to avoid burning the skin.

Since the capacitive technique allows you to work with greater intensities, at greater depths and with a greater increase in temperature, this mode is always the first therapeutic choice.

But you can combine the two modes: in this way you get better and faster results.

This combination is recommended especially in cases where, after an application in capacitive mode, the typical spots or areas of redness appear on the skin, a sign of localised hyperaemia. In most cases, an application in resistive mode on these areas will optimise the treatment results.

Ultimately, the capacitive mode is suitable for any type of treatment, because of its power and tissue penetration capacity, while the resistive technique remains a faithful ally to complete more superficial treatments, as in the case of tendons and ligaments, but also of bone near the skin.

In order to resolve the long-winded and sterile discussion about which of the two penetrates more deeply, we have created a direct demonstration that shall put an end to the absurd belief, still quite common, that the resistive technique penetrates deeper than the capacitive one.

Anyone with a tecar therapy device can easily conduct this experiment:

Place a finger on the passive plate and apply the capacitive electrode on the forearm. Increase the intensity up to 40% of the maximum power and observe how the heat begins to increase and spread, from the phalanx towards the hand. You can even measure it, using a ruler and marking the point up to which heat is felt after a couple of minutes. Change finger, and repeat the same operation with the resistive mode, always at 40% of maximum power. Then compare the heat sensation and its spread in the hand with that felt during application in capacitive mode. You will no longer be under any doubt as to which of the two techniques penetrates deeper.

Although these two tecar therapy techniques are included in the same device, they are two very different modes.
